Hello Pluto!

NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration
After a decade-long journey through our solar system, our New Horizons spacecraft made its closest approach to Pluto today, about 7,750 miles above the surface -- roughly the same distance from New York to Mumbai, India - making it the first-ever space mission to explore a world so far from Earth. Mid Year Concert: Tuesday, June 16

Our twelve ensembles will come together to showcase their talents at the Mid Year Concert. It will be held at the SSC Leichhardt Campus on Tuesday, 16th June at 6.00pm. It promises to be an amazing night of music so mark this date in your diary.

Attention Music Program Parents:
All our music ensembles are performing - Twinklers String Group, Mozart String Group, Vivaldi String Group, Beethhovens String Group, Junior Band, Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Symphoney Orchestra, Big Band, K-2 Choir, 3-4 Choir and 5-6 Choir.

We would like all students from the String and Band program to arrive at 5.40pm. String instruments are to be left in the room behind the hall and band instruments in the corridor near the foyer (don't worry, we will have parents directing you to the right place). Once you have arrived please drop your children directly to the hall.

Choir members are to meet their teacher outside the hall on the basketball court at 5.50pm. If your child is in the string and band program please make sure they meet Mr A or Anne first inside the hall.
The hall will be closed to the general audience until 6pm when the doors will open. This allows us to set-up and do all the necessary sound checks before the concert starts.

We ask that all music members wear their blue music t-shirts with navy blue bottoms - please do not wear the t-shirt over the top of school dresses or over the school uniform.

We are running a little short of small blue music t-shirts and are asking parents to send in any spare music shirts to the front office. There are still quite a few larger sizes and if your child has grown out of their original shirts now may be the time to make the swap.

We are looking forward to celebrating our wonderful music program next week.

LPS Helps Nepal

What a brilliant response to the gold coin collection for Nepal. At last count we had collected $1150 which will be forwarded to our friends at Oxfam. Thank you to our mathematicians who calculated the size of the sign needed to accommodate 1000 x $1 coins and who also set up the final message in gold coins. Also a big thank you to our student leaders who collected the $1150 at the entry gates this morning. What a wonderful school community we have!

The most important skill to teach your child

One common trait all successful adults have is resilience.

The ability to bounce back from disappointment is something we have the opportunity to teach our children every day.

As our kids constantly remind us, life isn't always fair. Is it a parent's role to constantly try to make life fair?

Ten cybersafety tips every parent should know

Keeping your kids safe online is easy with a few simple precautions.

1. Nothing replaces parental supervision and education for kids about cybersafety.
2. Set a technology curfew.
3. Remind your child to never give out identifying information such as your home address, school name or telephone number in a public message such as chat or newsgroups.
4. If your child posts photos online, use privacy settings to limit access to people they know well.
5. Remind your child that people don't always tell the truth online, and they can't take anything at face value.
6. Reassure your child that they can tell you anything, without fear of losing the laptop or internet access.
7. If they get a message or email that's threatening or rude, they should 'STOP, BLOCK, TELL'. First step is to tell your child to stop responding to the abuse and then block those people sending threatening or rude messages if they continue. Let your child know that if they are being bullied, or know someone else who is, they should tell a trusted adult.
8. Never click on any links that are contained in emails from people they don't know. As well as sexual content, they could contain a computer virus.
9. If you suspect your child has been contacted by a predator, try to save a copy of the chat log (or whatever form the contact takes) for evidence. Call Crime Stoppers 24-hour line 1800 333 000 to make a formal complaint.
10.Your child will be using computers and the technology for the rest of their lives – you're in the great position of being able to get them off to a safe, positive start

Leichhardt Public School ANZAC Day Service

Leichhardt Public School held its ANZAC service on Friday, April 24. It was a formal and moving service and we were very proud of the respect shown by our students. Our student leaders conducted the service and introduced our special guest, Private Katrina Bougiouras, who shared her reflections on the ANZAC story and spoke of the ANZAC spirit that we value today. All leaders shared stories and prayers commemorating the ANZAC centenary, our Yr 3-6 choir performed a beautiful song 'The Spirit of the ANZAC', Connor McManus from Year 6 contributed by playing the Last Post and Mr Reid shared his story about  his family and their ANZAC connection- the service was  was a very moving experience.
Thank you to Ms Wherry for her coordination of the event.

Note: All students received a commemorative coin to celebrate the ANZAC centenary. (see image)

Nurturing the artist in your child

Your child may not go on to become a famous musician, actor, dancer, filmmaker or artist.
But by nurturing the artist in your child you can help them grow up able to think for themselves, problem solve and work out different ways to do things.
They'll also be better able to see different points of view, communicate and express their feelings in different ways. Read More
